In the novel Kim, Rudyard Kipling called Spiti “a world within a world” and “a place where the gods live.” Located in the Himalayan rain-shadow between high, barren mountain ranges, this is a fascinating land of ancient Buddhist monasteries, remote villages and cultural traditions going back centuries. Our tour guides you to the best of this spectacular part of India.

Kaza is the capital and regional headquarters of Spiti valley in the Lahaul and Spiti district of HP. Situated in the Trans-Himalayan region of India at an elevation of 3600m, Kaza is the biggest and most developed town in Spiti valley. which is a part of the Lahaul and Spiti district of HP, is a high altitude desert having close similarities to the neighboring Tibet and Ladakh regions in terms of terrain, climate and the Buddhist culture.

Itinerary

Day 1:Arrive in Delhi

At your arrival to the capital, after the boarding and lodging process you shall be guided to visit the last city of pre- independent India then known as the ‘Lutyen’s city’ built by the British architect Edwin Lutyen in 1911. The main visiting the attractions will include the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Birla Mandir (Lakshminarayan Temple), and India Gate. Also visit an astounding piece of architecture from the Mughal era – The Humayun Tomb. O/N hotel

Day 2:Delhi-Chandigarh 240kms

After having breakfast, drive toward Chandigarh. Arrival in Chandigarh and visit the city built by Le Corbusier, the famous Swiss architect. Discovery of the Rock Garden , a unique garden where sculptures of stones, various materials or urban waste coexist! Self-taught founding artist Nek Chand has made his dream come true by building a fairy garden that today is said to be the second most visited site in India after the Taj Mahal. O/N hotel

Day 3:Chandigarh-Manali (2050m) 300kms

Day three we will begin our journey towards Manali. our journey still continues on plains of Punjab till we reach the edge Himachal, then driving through the hilly Kullu valley to Manali. O/N hotel

Day 4:Manali-Naggar Castle-Manali (2050m)

Manali is named after the lawgiver Manu. The word Manali comes from “Manu-Alaya” which literally means “the abode of Manu “located at an altitude of 2050M in the Beas River valley. Visit Manali which is circled by beautiful glades of deodars and flowering horse chestnuts.Visit Hadimba Temple, a four-story wooden temple is located in the middle of a forest. Afternoon visit Naggar 1760m. It is located on a wooded slope and commands an extensive view. It was the capital of erstwhile Kullu state for about 1400 years. Here, visit Roerich art gallery which houses the paintings of Nicholas Roerich as well as his sculptures. O/N hotel

Day 5:Manali-Rohtang la (3937m)-Kunzom la (4590m)-Spiti valley (3600m) 192kms

Drive to Spiti valley that takes around 10hrs, early in the morning ascend the Rohtang la,then drive toward Gramphoo, have breakfast there, and you can enjoy view of steep mountains, drive continue toward Chatru and see some of the biggest waterfalls then huge streams join the Chandra river. In Batal you can have lunch, aftermath The road climbs gently towards the start of the high pass of Spiti valley, we reach the Kunzom La at (4590m). View of the Chandra-Bhaga and Barashigri mountains, with many peaks over 6000m then the bumpy road will end at Losar. Final stretch to Kaza after a small break, take another two hours to reach Kaza, check in at a hotel and enjoy the remaining time. O/N hotel

Day 6:Kiber-Ki-Kaza (3600m) 50kms

After having breakfast, drive toward Ki monastery, the centre of learning in Spiti valley, visit Ki Gompa, a monastery high above the Spiti River. There are spectacular views both down and up of valley from here. Then we drive toward Kiber village, which is said to be highest motor-able village in the world. In the high mountains around Kiber where you can spot the rarest Snow Leopard and Himalayan Ibex. O/N hotel

Day 7:Tabo-Dhankar-Kaza (3600m) 75kms

After having breakfast we will drive toward Tabo, first we visit in Dhankar Monastery and Lake. Dhankar village is the seat of the Spitian King in the ancient times, claimed to be 1000 years old, Dhankar Gompa perched at 4000m, with some beautiful wall paintings, is on the cliff of a mountain from where you can see Pin and Spiti river. Hike to Dhankar lake (source of water to Dhankar village) which is a steep walk of 45 minutes and the hike is optional, after spending some time at the lake and head back towards Tabo monastery, also known as the “Ajantas of the Himalayas”, Tabo monastery along with Alchi in Ladakh, is one of the oldest gompas in the Buddhist world, dating back to 966, and, like Alchi, centers around a Dukhang (assembly hall) set on the ground floor (with the spreading of Buddhism, later monasteries, like Ki and Dhankar, were built on hillsides to reflect the enhanced status of Buddhism) and it still has a flourishing art school. Tabo is enough off the beaten track to feel pleasantly isolated from the tourist trail. Back to Kaza. O/N hotel

Day 8:Kaza - Langza - Komic - Hikkim (excursion)

The day begins with a small climb up the road to the remote villages of Spiti Langza (village is home to Fossil search in the country), Komic and Hikkim . Walk to meet the inhabitants, to discuss their daily lifestyle and better understand the adaptations necessary to the seasons. Return to Kaza at the end of the afternoon. Return to Kaza. O/N hotel

Day 9:Kaza- Chandrataal Lake (4250m) 85kms

Morning we leave Kaza and head towards Chandratal (4220m) on the way we will be crossing a high mountain pass that is Kunzom La (4590m) which connects Kullu and Lahaul valley with Spiti valley. After crossing the pass we drive to Chandratal “Lake of the Moon”, we reach at a point from where vehicles are not allowed and camping is no longer permitted near the lake. We trek to the beautiful Chandratal, reach there and walk around the lake, it is the location where you can take maximum photographs since the place is amazingly beautiful, (from Chandratal one can do a trek for 4-5 days to reach Baralacha La (4890m) which is a high mountain pass on the Leh-Manali highway) then we head back to the camping point and relax at the camp.O/N camp O/N Camp .

Day 10:Chandrataal - Manali 130kms

Leave early in the morning to Manali after breakfast, take a small break at Batal. Reach Rohtang pass by early afternoon and spend some time at the pass. Head to Manali and relax and stay there. O/N hotel

Day 11:Manali - Delhi

Head back to take your bus or taxi to Delhi and the trip ends in the afternoon. Tour ends with sweets memories.

  • While taking Photographs- Respect privacy-ask permission and restraint use of flashlight for photography and filming inside National Monuments and smoking and alcohol drinking is strictly prohibited
  • Respect Holy Place- preserve what you have come to see- never touch or remove religious objects- purchase and sale of antiques which is more than 100 years old is against the law and it attracts punishment under rules.
  • Keep stream water clean and avoid using pollutants such as detergents in stream and springs- if no toilets facilities are available- make sure are at least 30 Meter away from water source and Bury or cover waste.
  • Giving to Children encourages begin- a donation to project like Health Centre or School is a more constructive way to help.
  • Visitors who value local traditions encourage local prides and maintain local cultures-please help them to gain a realistic view of life in other parts of the World.

Drinking Water
Staying hydrated is important when undertaking any physical activity but particularly so at altitude where it is generally recommended to drink at least 3-4 litres per person per day.

Weather
The above weather chart for Lahaul and Spti valley shows average temperatures only – it does not reflect extremes of heat and cold. Generally the weather is good in valley during the summer time, with warm to very hot sunny days (up to 30ºC/35ºC+) with cooler nights depending on the altitude (it can reach freezing at some higher place in September). There is, however, the possibility of rain, and you should be prepared for this. The sun is very strong at these altitudes and some of the days on trek can be extremely hot.

Lahaul and Spiti, though technically part of the Tibetan plateau and classified as a high altitude, can and does occasionally experience the effects of the Indian monsoon. Although the departures are timed to coincide when the weather is normally good, you should remember that in any mountain area the weather is never wholly predictable and you should be prepared and equipped to deal with any differences in weather beyond the conditions described above.
